A Somali athlete has sparked reactions and outrage for her terrible performance which has officially earned her title of the ‘Worst Athlete In The World’.
Nasro Abukar Ali came in last place during the 100m race at the ongoing 31st Summer World University Games held in Chengdu, China on Tuesday, setting a new record for the slowest finish in the competition’s history after finishing 10 seconds behind other athletes.
She plodded over the finish line arriving at the finish line in 21.81 seconds sparking ridicule and outrage among Somalis on social media arrived with her efforts soon drawing attention on Twitter.
Somali sports authorities have come under fire for selecting Nasro who has been accused of being underqualified and unfit, to represent the country.
Addressing the spectacle, the East African nation’s youth and sports minister Mohamed Barre Mohamud released a statement, saying that Nasro Abukar had “been identified as not [a] sports person nor a runner”.
An investigation found that Nasro Abukar allegedly got the chance to compete in Chengdu because she was related to the chairwoman.
