Nothing Phone 2

Design

The Nothing Phone 2 maintains the distinctive design elements that made its predecessor, the Nothing Phone 1, stand out. With an all-screen front, a flat metal frame, and a transparent glass back, it continues to deliver a unique and futuristic look. Despite its slightly increased dimensions (162.1 x 76.4 x 8.6 mm) and weight (201 grams) compared to the Phone 1, the Nothing Phone 2 maintains a premium feel.

The Glyph LEDs, which are a key visual feature, maintain their characteristic shapes and patterns. This LEDs remain prominent and visually striking, featuring various patterns and animations.

However, there are subtle changes in their arrangement, with three interruptions present – one around the camera module (C), another around the wireless charging coil (G), and an i-shaped interruption near the bottom. These LEDs are not just for show; they serve multiple purposes and can be controlled via software.

The back panel is crafted from Gorilla Glass, providing both durability and aesthetics. While the front screen glass is flat and Corning-made, the specific Gorilla Glass version is not specified. The midframe is made from recycled aluminum and boasts a pleasing matte finish. It’s worth noting that the phone is slightly slimmer than its predecessor, adding to its overall refinement.

The 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display dominates the front, offering enhanced refresh rate capabilities and higher brightness compared to its predecessor. The bezels are consistent and thin, reminiscent of recent iPhone designs. Additionally, the Nothing Phone 2 features a small perforation at the top, housing the upgraded 32MP selfie camera (up from 16MP on the Phone 1). Above the screen, you’ll find the earpiece grille, which doubles as a stereo speaker.

Beneath the display, an optical fingerprint scanner remains hidden, offering fast and accurate performance. The back panel’s curvature, coupled with the Glyph LEDs, adds a unique touch to the design, and the android phone maintains its grip with a matte metal frame.

Button placement includes separate volume keys on the right side, while the power/lock key sits alone on the right. The top houses an additional microphone, while the bottom features the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB-C port, and the second stereo speaker.

Display

The Nothing Phone 2 features a notable improvement in its display compared to its predecessor, the Phone 1. It boasts a larger 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a 1080p resolution and introduces a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, resulting in a smoother and more responsive display experience.

This LTPO AMOLED panel vary the refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, which in theory, should help squeeze out better battery life. The outdoor screen brightness is now 1,000 nits and in HDR video playback, it can reach up to 1,600 nits (1,200 nits on Phone 1), ensuring vibrant visuals and excellent outdoor visibility.

This OLED display supports a 10-bit color depth, HDR10+, and  20:9 ratio aspect ratio, while measuring a screen to body ratio of 87.2%.  The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass, and in testing, it achieved a maximum automatic brightness of 1,000 nits, making it a significant enhancement in display quality.

Camera

The Nothing Phone 2 maintains a similar camera setup to its predecessor, featuring two 50-megapixel rear cameras and a 32-megapixel selfie camera. While the images captured by these cameras show overall improvement over the Phone 1, particularly in well-lit conditions, they still exhibit issues with sharpness and detail when viewed at full size.

Notably, the 50MP main camera benefits from a Sony IMX890 sensor with improved autofocus and optical image stabilization, resulting in better-defined textures and sharper details. The supporting 50MP ultra-wide camera also remains unchanged from the Phone 1. The camera uses the Samsung JN1 sensor and features f/2.2 aperture, 1/2.76″ pixel size and  0.64µm individual pixel with autofocus, thus enabling high-resolution macro photography.

For selfie lovers, there is the upgraded 32-megapixel selfie camera which delivers decent results in daylight and performs well in portrait mode, but it struggles in low-light scenarios.

Meanwhile, this phone supports up to 4K 60fps video recording and LiveHDR recording at 4K 30fps, as well as, 1080p at 30/60fps. To enhance video stability and quality, the phone features gyro-electronic image stabilization (gyro-EIS), live HDR (High Dynamic Range), and optical image stabilization (OIS). These features contribute to smoother, more stable video footage and improved dynamic range, ensuring high-quality video recording options for users.

In terms of features, the camera app offers a comprehensive range of options, including standard, macro, portrait, and panoramic modes. While the Nothing Phone 2’s camera system may not rival flagship devices from premium brands, it excels in capturing vibrant colors and detailed macro shots.

Hardware and Software

The Nothing Phone 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, offering flagship-level performance. The chipset features lower clock speeds for energy efficiency while maintaining solid CPU and GPU performance. The phone comes in different memory configurations, including 8GB RAM + 128GB storage, 12GB RAM + 256GB storage (as reviewed), and 12GB RAM + 512GB storage.

Furthermore, the Nothing Phone 2 runs on the Nothing OS 2.0, which is a slightly modified version of Android 13. The company promises 3 years of Android updates and 4 years of security patches every 2 months, ensuring users have access to the latest software features and security enhancements.

The user interface of the Phone 2 is reminiscent of Google Pixel devices, with familiar elements such as the launcher, Settings app, and pre-installed apps closely resembling stock Android.

Additionally, the OS includes quick shortcuts on most system apps for easy access. Nothing OS 2.0 introduces custom widgets, including clocks, weather, quick settings, calendar, and a unique Nothing X widget that integrates well with the launcher. The launcher also supports large folders and large single icons for user customization.

The storage options on this smartphone range from 128GB to 512GB with 8GB to 12GB of RAM. Meanwhile the phone lack support for MicroSD slot for expandable storage.

Above all, the Nothing Phone 2 is equipped with a 4700mAh battery, which should easily last a full day on a single charge, even with moderate to heavy usage. The inclusion of a 15W wireless charger and 47W wired fast charger ensures quick recharging, reducing downtime and keeping users connected for longer periods.
