Design
The OnePlus 12R maintains the distinctive large circular camera island from its predecessor, reminiscent of the flagship OnePlus 12’s design. Despite being the more budget-friendly option, the 12R faithfully mirrors the OnePlus 12’s design, down to the number of lenses in the circular camera array on the rear.
Furthermore, the OnePlus 12R is constructed with an aluminum frame with glass front and back and doesn’t compromise on build quality. The frosted look of the back panel, while aesthetically pleasing, is a magnet for fingerprints. The device feels robust and well-constructed, with the only potential gripe being a subtle ridge at the bottom where the display meets the frame.
In addition, this device measures 163.3 x 75.3 x 8.8 mm dimension and weighs 207 g. On the front, there is a 6.78-inch display which dominates the front panel leaving an ultra-thin bezel around it. The device also has a punch-hole notch at the top center of the display hosting the front-facing camera. There is also the in-display fingerprint sensor which proves to be both swift and accurate in unlocking the device.
Despite its heft, the android phone is thoughtfully designed for ergonomic comfort, featuring curved edges and a relatively thin body. Meanwhile, the circular camera module, housing three lenses and an LED light, integrates seamlessly with the back panel, contributing to an overall sleek appearance.
The inclusion of the alert slider, which was absent in the OnePlus 10T, on the left side is a welcome return. This Slider is accompanied by responsive volume and power buttons on the opposite side. Additionally, the SIM slot, USB Type-C charging port, and speaker configuration are conveniently located at the bottom.
In terms of durability, the OnePlus 12R boasts Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and an IP65 certification for water and dust resistance. While not matching the IP68 standard seen in premium models, the device can withstand splashes and rain, although caution is advised against submersion. The color options include Cool Blue and Iron Gray, with the former showcasing a striking aesthetic in the provided images.
Display
The OnePlus 12R boasts an impressive 6.78-inch LTPO4 AMOLED display, featuring a resolution of 2780 x 1264 pixels and a pixel density of 450 pixels per inch. This expansive display covers approximately 90.9% of the device’s front surface, offering an immersive visual experience.
The variable refresh rate is a standout feature, ranging from a fluid 120Hz for smooth interactions down to 1Hz for power efficiency during less demanding tasks. The display’s peak brightness is a remarkable 4,500 nits, ensuring exceptional visibility even in bright outdoor conditions. This, coupled with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+, delivers stunning contrast and color accuracy for a captivating multimedia experience.
Additionally, the OnePlus 12R boosts a 10-bit color depth that adds depth and richness to the on-screen visuals, providing a more nuanced and lifelike representation of colors. Similarly, the touch interactions on this display are remarkably responsive, thanks to the impressive 1000 Hz touch response rate, contributing to a seamless and fluid user experience.
To safeguard the display, OnePlus features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, offering advanced protection against scratches and accidental drops. Additionally, this device supports the Aquatouch feature, utilizing the device’s CPU, intelligently detects wet conditions and adjusts the touch response accordingly, preventing mistouches and ensuring continued functionality.
Camera
The OnePlus 12R is equipped with a triple rear camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), and optical image stabilization (OIS). This primary camera, a familiar feature from the previous OnePlus 11 model, is expected to deliver reliable and high-quality imaging.
Accompanying the primary sensor, the phone adds an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an expansive 112-degree field of view, allowing users to capture wider perspectives. Additionally, a 2-megapixel macro camera is included for close-up shots, although the mention of a macro lens hints at a potential compromise in terms of flagship camera capabilities.
It’s worth noting that the absence of a dedicated telephoto lens in the OnePlus 12R’s camera setup distinguishes it from the regular OnePlus 12. Instead, the device opts for an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, emphasizing a broader perspective for photography. There is also both 2x and 5x buttons in its zoom selector, although the result might be lacking compared to the OnePlus 12.
On the front, the OnePlus 12R houses a 16-megapixel selfie camera, positioned to deliver sharp and detailed self-portraits. While the front camera may not boast the same high megapixel count as some flagship devices, it remains suitable for everyday photography needs.
Meanwhile, camera features include LED flash, HDR, and panorama mode. The video recording capabilities are robust, supporting 4K recording at 30/60fps, as well as various other options at 1080p with different frame rates. Furthermore, the inclusion of optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (gyro-EIS) enhances video stability.
Hardware and Software
The OnePlus 12R is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, last year’s flagship chipset. This is a step back from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset found on the OnePlus 12 flagship. It features an octa-core CPU configuration with a performance-oriented Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2 GHz, accompanied by two Cortex-A715 cores at 2.8 GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores at 2.8 GHz, and three power-efficient Cortex-A510 cores at 2.0 GHz. This chipset is complemented by the Adreno 740 GPU, contributing to smooth and responsive performance.
For memory options, the OnePlus 12R includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the base version or a higher-end variant with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, utilizing faster UFS 4.0 chips. This configuration ensures efficient multitasking and ample storage for users with varying needs.
Additionally, this device comes pre-installed with Android 14, offering the latest features and improvements from the Android ecosystem. OnePlus has incorporated its OxygenOS 14 interface on top, providing enhanced security and privacy features while maintaining the clean and user-friendly design that users appreciate. The device promises three major OS upgrades and four years of security patches, aligning with the commitment to long-term software support.
One notable feature is the large 5,500 mAh battery, emphasizing extended battery life. This substantial capacity is designed to provide users with extended usage between charges, contributing to the device’s overall longevity and user satisfaction.
The OnePlus 12R boasts an impressive 100W wired charging capability, enabling users to charge their device from 1% to 100% in a mere 26 minutes, as per the advertised specifications. This rapid charging feature is a significant advancement in charging technology, allowing users to quickly replenish their device’s battery and minimize downtime.
For connectivity, this OnePlus device supports Wi-Fi 7 dual-band. Bluetooth 5.3 version, NFC, 5G network, and USB Type-C 2.0 for quick and easy sharing.
