Origin of the name ‘Ugandan Rolex’
You are probably how the name ‘Rolex’ came about.
The name ‘Rolex’ is derived from its appearance – it is a ‘rolled omelette’. Word on the streets says the name ‘Ugandan Rolex’ originated when someone couldn’t pronounce “Rolled Eggs” and said ‘Rolex’ instead which soon stuck.
Ugandan Rolex originated from the Busonga region in Uganda where it was quickly adopted by university students who needed a meal that was quick and easy to make, as well as affordable.
Chapati Ingredients
Chapati which is a major ingredient for this recipe is a traditional flatbread native to India but popularly eaten in East Africa countries like Burundi, Uganda, Mozambique, Kenya, etc. You can also use a tortilla wrap instead.
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 tbsp. oil
- 1¼ C. water
Preparation
1. In a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Use a wooden spoon to stir in the oil and enough water to make a soft dough that is elastic but not sticky.
2. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-10 minutes until it is smooth. Divide into 10 pieces, or less if you want bigger breads. Roll each piece into a ball. Let rest for a few minutes.
3. Heat a frying pan over medium heat until hot, and grease lightly. On a lightly floured surface, use a floured rolling pin to roll out the balls of dough until very thin like a tortilla.
4. When the pan starts smoking, put a chapati on it. Cook until the underside has brown spots, about 30 seconds, then flip and cook on the other side. Put on a plate and keep warm, then assemble ingredients for your Rolex recipe.
